N5/N4
The N5 and N4 levels of the Japanese Language Proficiency Test (JLPT) refer to different proficiency levels in the Japanese language. The JLPT is a standardized test that evaluates and certifies non-native speakers Japanese language proficiency.
Passing the Japanese Language Proficiency Test (JLPT) is useful when your main goal in Japan is seeking employment or educational advancement.
1. N5 Level (日本語能力試験 N5):
- This is the easiest level of the JLPT.
- It tests basic understanding of simple expressions used in everyday situations.
- Focus is on basic grammar, vocabulary, and kanji characters.
- Successful completion of the N5 level indicates the ability to understand some basic Japanese, mainly in everyday situations.

2. N4 Level (日本語能力試験 N4)
- This level is a step above N5 and requires a higher proficiency.
- It tests a broader range of grammar, vocabulary, and kanji characters compared to N5.
- N4 is designed to assess the ability to understand and use Japanese in everyday situations, as well as in a wider range of circumstances compared to N5.
- Successful completion of the N4 level suggests a moderate level of Japanese language proficiency.
Having a certain JLPT level can be beneficial when applying to Japanese educational institutions, as some may require a minimum proficiency level for admission. If you are planning to study in Japan, it's essential to check the specific language requirements of the educational program you are interested in, as they may have their own language proficiency requirements independent of the JLPT. Additionally, improving your Japanese language skills can enhance your overall experience while living and studying in Japan.
