About JFT
What is JFT?
Japan Foundation Test for Basic Japanese (JFT) is the is a standardized test to measure the level of Japanese language proficiency needed by foreign nationals about to reside in Japan mainly for work, to communicate in everyday life situations. It was started by the Japan Foundation in April 2019. The JFT is a test that helps people who are learning Japanese to see how well they know the language.
Levels
The JFT-Basic has two levels
- JFT-Basic (A1): Designed for beginners who have just started learning Japanese.
- JFT-Basic (A2): Suitable for learners with slightly more experience but still at the beginner level.
Sections:
The JFT-Basic consists of four sections: Script and Vocabulary, Conversation and Expression, Listening Comprehension and Reading Comprehension.
Why need JFT?
It can be used to provide proof of Japanese language proficiency, which is required when applying for the certificate of eligibility for residence in Japan. Passing the test is necessary for jobs or school that require Japanese language. It's like a certificate that shows you're skilled in the language and needed to obtain the residency status of “Specified Skilled Worker”.
How test is conducted?
This test is conducted through Computer-Based Testing (CBT). Computers are used for giving and answering the test questions at test centers in each country. In booths, test-takers answer on the computer screen based on questions displayed on the screen and audio played through the headphones.
This test is for foreign nationals whose native language is not Japanese. Please visit Prometric's registration website for further details, as each country has its own eligibility criteria.
The test questions and choices are displayed on the central area of the computer screen. In addition, the section name, test name, time remaining and status of answers are displayed on the borders of the screen.
